From the sculptural tradition of the so-called “picasass” (stone-cutters) of Viggiù, through the civic collections up to the contemporary avant-guard of the Gallarate MAGa, the suggested guided visits will be about the historic and architectural description of a museum or of a museum collection, of its permanent collection and of its possible temporary exhibition.

Masnago Castle
Varese Civic Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art

Masnago Castle

Born as a fortress in medieval times, it was transformed into a private holiday resort after lots of modification and extension works. The Castle keeps some cycles of splendid XV cent. frescoes in International Gothic style, ordered by Castiglioni Family. It has been the seat of the Varese Civic Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art since 1995 and it houses some masterpieces from XVI century to our times.Worth a visit its precious rooms dedicated to Lombard XIX cent. painting with works by Hayez, Grandi, Longoni, Ranzoni, Pellizza da Volpedo and Balla.

MAGa
Art Museum Gallarate

MAGa

Conceived and founded by Silvio Zanella in 1966, thanks to the works coming from the first eight editions of the National Prize Visual Arts Gallarate Town, the historic Civic Gallery of Modern Art is now taking up a new building opened in March 2010: the MAGa. The collection, exhibited in rotation, counts more than 5,000 works and it offers its visitors a rich and well-constructed survey of the trends which animated the national art scene from mid-XX cent. to our times.

Enrico Butti Civic Museum
A collection of plaster casts at Viggiù

Butti collection

The museum looks like a rich collection of plaster casts by Enrico Butti ( 1847-1932), an artist of Viggiù, and it is situated close to his house-studio. In 1926 he gave it to his birth commune, famous for its long time sculptural tradition, and it consists of a large collection of preliminary plaster figures. Many of them are memorial, funerary and romantic-verist works.
